Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)

We are looking for a Forward Deployed Engineer: part hands-on practitioner, part strategic advisor, fully embedded in the customer's engineering reality. This is not a support role. You will sit inside enterprise engineering organizations, drive adoption of automated code transformation, and help teams navigate the intersection of large-scale codebase modernization and AI-assisted development.

The Forward Deployed Engineering model, increasingly adopted across the AI software industry, puts technical talent directly at the point of customer value delivery. That's exactly what this role does. You will be the primary technical bridge between our enterprise customers and the Moderne platform, working alongside Platform Engineering leads and our Customer Success team to plan and execute mass-scale code modernization, write custom OpenRewrite recipes, and help organizations understand and evolve their codebases at a pace that matches modern AI-driven development cycles

Strategic Technical Advisory

• Own the post-sales technical execution with a portfolio of enterprise accounts, acting as their advocate and OpenRewrite subject matter expert. 
• Partner with customer stakeholders, from VPs of Engineering to Principal Architects, to plan and automate large modernization initiatives such as upgrading Spring Boot across thousands of microservices, eliminating OWASP vulnerabilities, or migrating applications off legacy platforms. 
• Enable customers to better understand their code at scale through existing and custom recipes, and help them position Moderne as foundational infrastructure for AI coding agents operating across their repositories.

Hands-On Engineering and Enablement

• Provide expert guidance on the Moderne ecosystem, build tools, and CI/CD integration. 
• Assist customers in developing, testing, and deploying custom OpenRewrite recipes to solve organization-specific code patterns. 
• Troubleshoot complex integration issues involving the Moderne CLI, private artifact repositories, and enterprise build pipelines. 
• Help engineering teams understand how automated transformation fits into their broader agentic development workflows, including AI coding assistants, agent-based pull request automation, and LLM-driven code generation at scale using our suite of Agent Tools (Trigrep search, Prethink context, MCP, OpenRewrite recipes as tools, and future innovations).
• Lead customer enablement and education initiatives, often involving presenting and demoing to large audiences.

Catalog Expansion

• Monitor new developments relevant to our customers and proactively develop recipes for new versions of Java, .NET, IaC (YAML, Kubernetes, Terraform), JavaScript/TypeScript/Node.js, Python, Go, Scala, and future supported languages and other widely applicable releases. 
• Support and enable contributions from customers and the wider OSS community to expand recipe coverage. 
• Identify patterns emerging from AI-generated code that create new modernization and remediation needs, and help translate those patterns into durable, reusable recipes.

Required

• 10+ years of experience in software development or a hands-on Solutions Architecture, technical account management, or software consulting role
• Must be comfortable developing enterprise software 
• Familiarity with agentic development workflows: AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, etc.), LLM-based code generation, or agent frameworks operating on codebases
• Deep understanding of Java, the JVM, and its ecosystem, including dependency management in Maven and Gradle or other supported languages and ecosystems such as .NET and Python
• Experience with enterprise build systems (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI) and artifact management (Artifactory, Nexus)
• Proven track record managing relationships with large enterprise customers, with the ability to navigate complex political and technical environments
• Mindset for troubleshooting build failures and static analysis edge cases
• Ability to pass background checks required by our clients for system access (education, criminal history, drug testing, etc.)

Preferred

• Experience with other languages such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, or .NET
• OpenRewrite experience: familiarity with the OpenRewrite project, Lossless Semantic Trees (LSTs), or writing recipes Static analysis experience: SAST tools (SonarQube, Checkmarx) or other code analysis platforms
• Application security vulnerability detection and remediation tools and methodologies
• Previous experience leading or participating in large-scale migration projects (e.g., Java 8 to 17 migrations)
